On August 10th, 2010, a.t.b., the Holy Britannian Empire overpowered Japanese forces and conquered the country with their robotic weapons, the Knightmare Frames. This new technology overpowered Japan's forces and quickly Japan surrendered.

Japan lost its freedom and rights and was renamed to Area 11, under the complete control of the Britannian Empire. The Japanese people, stripped of their identity and now referred to as "Elevens" (As in People of "Area 11), are now forced to survive in ghettos, while Britannians live in first-class settlements. Yet rebel elements exist, as pockets of Japanese nationalists continue the fight for their independence of their country "Japan".

A young boy named Lelouch made a pledge to destroy the Britannian Empire after his father, the Emperor of Britannian did nothing to pursue the terrorists who murdered his mother which caused his sister to be crippled and blind.

Seven years later, he stumbles upon a group of rebel Elevens who have stolen a military secret. This military secret is said to be a "Poisen Gas" to hide it's real identity but in reality it is a girl with a mysterious power called "Geass". With the weapon of Geass that he obtains from the secret, he finally has the tool he needs to face the Britannian Empire and take his revenge. Using the Japanese people as players of his chess board to help take and rule over the Britannian Empire.
